George V Silver Evening Purse, F. Bushell, 1919
Here we have a very attractive George V Sterling Silver Evening Purse with Tan Leather interior. The purse is oblong with rounded corners and hand engraved on both sides with floral swags and a ribbon and bow design. The chain and finger ring are also Sterling Silver. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The purse is made in Birmingham by F. Bushell and dates to 1919. There is not much information available about Bushell and his or her mark is rarely seen. It is mostly found on cigarette cases from the early 1920s. However this is a well made purse so the firm was clearly capable of accomplished workmanship.
Condition is good with just a few minor bruises to the silver and some marking to the leather interior, which could probably be cleaned up with a little bit of time spent on it. The clasp and hinge are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The purse is 12.5cm / 4.9ins long, 6.1cm / 2.4ins high and 1.7cm / 0.67ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 93.7g / 3.3oz, although this does of course include a small amount for the leather interior.
The hallmarks on the side of the purse are little rubbed through many years of cleaning but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter u for 1919 and the F B in separate circles makers' mark for F. Bushell.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the purse.
