George V Silver Egg Cup, Edward Barnard, 1921
This is a good quality George V Sterling Silver Egg Cup from the 1920s. The cup has a circular stepped base, a short pedestal stem and a plain body with a stepped rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The egg cup was made in London by the renowned silversmiths Edward Barnard & Sons and dates to 1921. Edward Barnard & Sons has a history that dates back to 1680 when the firm was established by Anthony Nelme. Through partnerships the Barnard family became involved in the silversmiths in 1773 and took control in 1829, renaming the firm Edward Barnard & Sons. Their most celebrated creation is the stunning silver gilt Lily Font from 1840, which forms part of the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London and has been used for Royal christenings ever since it was commissioned by Queen Victoria & Prince Albert.
Condition is good, with just one tiny ding in the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The egg cup stands 6.2cm / 2.4ins high and is 4.7cm / 1.8ins in diameter. It weighs in at a respectable 29.7g / 1.05oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter f for 1921 and the E B & S Ld in a shield makers' mark for Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
