George V Silver Egg Cup & Spoon Set, 1918/19
This is a charming Cased George V Sterling Silver Egg Cup and Spoon Set. The egg cup has a band of ribbon garland decoration around the top and a thread and bow pattern around the base. The spoon is in the Hanoverian pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind, making this ideal as a gift for a Christening or other special occasion.
The egg cup and spoon were made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Levi & Salaman with the egg cup dating to 1918 and the spoon to 1919. Founded by Phineas Levi and Joseph Salaman in 1870, Levi & Salaman quickly established a reputation for high quality silverware and remained in business for fifty years until they were merged into Barker Brothers in 1921, with the brand name continuing on through the twenties.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 100 years of good service. The box is very slightly scuffed on the outside but the hinges and clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The egg cup stands 5.8cm / 2.3ins high and is 4.6cm / 1.8ins in diameter. The spoon is 10.5cm / 4.1ins long. Unboxed, the egg cup and spoon weighs in at a respectable 36.1g / 1.27oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the cased set weighs 162g / 5.7oz.
The hallmarks are a litte rubbed on the egg cup but nice and clear on the spoon. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter t on the egg cup for 1918 and u on the spoon for 1919 and the L & S makers' mark for Levi & Salaman.
