George V Silver Dressing Set, Charles Boyton, 1919
Here we have a cased George V Sterling Silver Handled 3 Piece Dressing Set from just after the First World War. The set comprises of a shoe horn, a pair of glove stretchers and a button hook, which has sadly sustained some damage. The set is priced to reflect this.
The dressing set is made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Charles Boyton & Sons and dates to 1919. Founded in 1825, the firm was run by several generations of Charles Boytons up until the 1930s when they got into financial difficulties and the family had to sell.
Condition of the shoe horn and the glove stretchers is very good with no dings or dents and a good shine to the steel. Unfortunately the button hook has been in the wars and the silver handled has become damaged, although as a tool it remains perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The shoe horn is 17.3cm / 6.8ins long, the glove stretchers are 18.6cm / 7.3ins long and the button hook is 16.4cm / 6.5ins long. All together the set, unboxed, weighs in at 171.5g / 6oz but this is of course a combination of silver and steel.
The hallmarks on the handles are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter u for 1919 and the trefoil C B & S makers' mark for Charles Boyton & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
