George V Silver Condiment Set, Elkington, 1913/15
Here we have a very smart George V Sterling Silver and Cut Glass three piece Condiment Set. The set consists of an open salt, a pepper shaker and a mustard pot on a stand with a sweeping handle and four ball feet. The glass bodies of the salt, pepper and mustard are octagonal with round silver tops on the pepper and mustard. The stand has gadrooned rims and pierced sides.
The set is made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Elkington & Co with the stand dating to 1913 and the silver tops of the pepper shaker and mustard pot dating to 1915. Founded by George Elkington in 1836, they were the first company in the world to register a patent for electroplating silver in 1838 but maintained their Sterling Silver manufacturing alongside their plating. A hugely successful and important company, they were merged into British Silverware along with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb in 1963.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents in the silver, just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 100 years of use. The glass is in good condition with just one tiny chip in the base of the mustard pot. The lid of the salt fits securely and the hinge of the mustard lid is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The set measures 10cm / 3.9ins from front to back, 7.2cm / 2.8ins across and stands 6.2cm / 2.4ins high. The weighable parts come in at a substantial 79.7g / 2.8oz of solid Sterling Silver and the total weight of the set, all in, is 224.5g / 7.9oz.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stand are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter o for 1913 and the distinctive E & Co makers' mark for Elkington & Co. The salt and mustard pot lids have partial sets that feature the date letter q for 1915.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the condiment set.
