George V Silver Bowl, Mappin & Webb, 1924
Here we have a well made small George V Sterling Silver Bowl. The bowl is a pedestal style with a stepped foot and a sweeping trumpet bowl crowned with a finely gadrooned rim.
The bowl is made in Sheffield by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1924. Originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr, in 1859 the firm split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after around 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 10.2cm / 4ins in diameter across the top rim and stands 4cm / 1.6ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 63.5g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the bowl, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter g for 1924 and the M & W makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. In addition the underside of the base has the retail stamp Mappin & Webb Ltd. Sheffield & London.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
