George IV Silver Table Spoon, William Bateman 1823
This is a very good quality George IV Sterling Silver Table Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The Table Spoon is made in London in a very good gauge of silver by silversmith William Bateman and dates to 1823. William Bateman was the third generation of the Bateman family of silversmiths and certainly the most accomplished of them. Hester Bateman, his grandmother, remains the most collectable member of the family but the quality of William's workmanship is significantly better.
Unusually for the Georgian era, there are no initials or crest on the stem of the spoon.
The Table Spoon is in very good condition with only the superficial wear & tear you would expect of an item that is nearly 200 years old. It is perfectly usable on a dining table today or would make a good addition to any collection. Please make sure you look at all the photos.
The spoon is 21.0cm long and weighs a substantial 50.8g of solid sterling silver.
The hallmarks at the top of the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read although the makers' mark is a little rubbed. They are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "h" for 1823, the George IV duty mark and the WB makers' mark for William Bateman.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
