George III Silver Vinaigrette, S. Pemberton, 1790

Here we have a lovely George III Sterling Silver Vinaigrette with gilt interior. The vinaigrette is octagonal with floral engraving on the lid around a cartouche which is elegantly engraved with the initials G B. The underside has a panel of cross hatched engraving. The inner grill is pierced in a figure of eight pattern and it still retains its original sponge.
The vinaigrette was made in Birmingham by Samuel Pemberton and dates to 1790. Samuel Pemberton founded his firm in 1775. He quickly established a good reputation particularly for his very fine vinaigrettes and snuff boxes, although he also made a variety of other items. He was later joined by his son with the company becoming Pemberton, Son & Mitchell in 1812 and then S. Pemberton & Son in 1821.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 235 years. The hinges on the lid and the grill are both in good order and the vinaigrette closes securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vinaigrette measures 2.9cm by 2.1cm and is 0.8cm high. It weighs in at 11.0g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, split between the interiors of the lid and the base, are slightly rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter S for 1790, the George III duty mark and the S P makers' mark for Samuel Pemberton.
Shipping in the UK is £10.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the vinaigrette.
