George III Silver Sugar Tongs, Henry Chawner
This is an attractive pair of George III Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs. The tongs have pierced arms with floral engraved panels on the shoulders and shell shaped bowls. A letter S is boldly engraved on the curve of the tongs.
The sugar tongs were made in London by silversmith Henry Chawner and date to between 1786 and 1796. Unfortunately the date letter is rubbed away so we can't be more specific. Henry Chawner registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1786 and worked from premises first at Amen Corner and then in Paternoster Row making a wide range of domestic silverware. In 1796 he formed a partnership with John Emes which lasted until around 1808 after which he appears to have retired with his wife and family to a large country house in Newton Valence, Hampshire. In 1801 he was elected to the Court of Assistants, the council of the Livery Companies of the City of London.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents, just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 200 years of use. There has been a very old small repair on the inside of one shoulder, which has been neatly and professionally done. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sugar tongs are 12.5cm / 4.9ins long and weigh in at 39.7g / 1.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the curve, are a little rubbed and the date letter has completely vanished. The existing ones show the lion passant for Sterling Silver and the H.C makers' mark in use by Henry Chawner between 1786 and 1796.
