George III Silver Spice Sifter Spoon, 1784

This is a top quality George III Sterling Silver Spice Sifter Spoon in the traditional Old English pattern. The spoon is made in London by Richard Crossley and dates to 1784. Richard Crossley was a specialist spoon maker who worked in London from the early 1780s up until his death in 1815.
Spice Sifter Spoons are small spoons with a pierced bowl that were used for sprinkling spices such as ground cinnamon or cayenne pepper onto food, usually desserts, or hot drinks such as a toddy or mulled wine. They are generally only found from the latter part of the eighteenth century or the very early nineteenth and are now highly collectable.
This sifter spoon is in excellent condition with no dings or dents and only the most superficial wear. It's a remarkable survivor given that it is over 235 years old.
The spoon is 9.2cm long and weighs a very respectable 12.6g of solid Sterling Silver.
As is usually the case with spoons of this period, the hallmarks on the underside of the stem are somewhat distorted. The process of hallmarking at this time caused the stem of the spoon to spread and the silversmith would hammer it back into shape after marking resulting in the distortion of the marks. On this spoon the marks can still be deciphered and show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "i" for 1784, the George III duty mark (introduced in this year) and the RC makers' mark for Richard Crossley.
