George III Silver Punch Ladle, London, 1763
Here we have an elegant early George III Sterling Silver Punch Ladle with a turned wooden handle. The silver bowl has a scalloped rim with a pouring lip on either side and a short silver shaft attaching to the handle. The initials W H A are engraved on the underside of the bowl.
The punch ladle was made in London in 1763. There is only a small part of the makers' mark still legible, which appears to be a letter A. This may be part of the mark of either Alexander Barnet or Edward Aldridge (II), who were both active at this time, but we cannot say for certain.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 260 years of good service. The handle is securely attached. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The punch ladle is 31.5cm / 12.4ins long and 9.3cm / 3.6ins across the bowl from lip to lip. It weighs 53.9g / 1.9oz.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the bowl, are well struck and clear to read, with the exception of the makers' mark as mentioned above. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London and the Gothic date letter H for 1763.
