George III Silver Fish Slice, John Shekleton, 1804
This is a very fine quality George III Sterling Silver Fish Slice or Fish Server in the traditional Fiddle pattern with a shaped and pierced blade. There is a thread engraving around the top of the blade and the piercing is a row of half moons below and indented oblongs above. The initial B is elegantly engraved on the top of the stem.
The fish slice is a well made piece in a good gauge of silver. It was made in London by John Shekleton and dates to 1804. John Shekleton was a specialist spoonmaker who is known to have been active in London between around 1799 and 1821 although most examples of his work in existence are from the first few years of this period.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 220 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The fish slice is 30.1cm / 11.8ins long, the blade is 6.2cm / 2.4ins across and the slice weighs in at a very substantial 127.6g / 4.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are incredibly crisp and clear for a piece of this age. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter I for 1804, the George III duty mark and the IS makers' mark for John Shekleton.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the fish slice.
