French 950 Silver Snuff Box, Solomon Pollak c.1890
Here we have a beautiful "Belle Epoque" French 950 Silver Snuff Box with a gilt interior from the late 19th century. The snuff box is oblong in form with rounded corners and engine turned decoration on all sides. The cartouche on the lid is blank and is surrounded by a rose and foliage design.
The makers' mark is a little difficult to decipher but we believe it is that of silversmith Solomon Pollak who was active in the 1890s, which definitely fits the design of the snuff box.
This is definitely a snuff box which has been used by its owner and has probably spent quite a lot of time in various pockets, however overall condition is good. There are a few small dings and a slightly larger thin dent at one end. The gilt interior is rubbed in places where fingers have reached in to pick out snuff over an extended period of time but still gives the box a luxurious feel. The hinge works perfectly and the box shuts nice and securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 8.2cm long, 3.3cm wide and 2.3cm high. It weighs a substantial 54.7g of solid high 950 grade silver.
The marks are on the rim of the lid. One shows the Minerva 1 mark in an octagon to show that it is 950/1000 grade silver (that's higher than English Sterling Silver which is 925/1000). The other mark is a diamond mark for the maker which is a little tricky to decipher but we believe shows the S P and a snake mark for Solomon Pollak.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the snuff box.
