Exceptional Georgian Silver Gilt Snuff Box 1825
An exceptional early 19th century Silver-gilt Pedlar Snuff box. Oval in form the hinged cover boldly chased with a wine pedlar and his wares within a camp with trees, tents, peasants and a building on the left, on a frosted ground. The hinged cover with the pedlar in high relief, the base and sides with finely chased foliate scroll and cherub decoration,
Measures in length 10cm, and weighs 6.8oz.
With cancelled marks, and marked with London Assay Office case number 8905.
The base of the box was altered most probably around 1840 with the finely chased foliate scroll and cherub decoration. It would have originally been plain. Marks are JL for John Linnit, King George IV duty mark, Assay Office London, and date 1825.
This is one for the serious collector. It is in Mint Condition. Outstanding quality and exquisitely made. Similar plain silver example is currently retailed online at £3,950. Another plain silver example reached £3,500 plus commission at Christies.
