Essex Miniature Sewing Machine with Case c.1950 %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
The Essex Miniature Sewing Machine is a superb example of British engineering. Made at the Essex Engineering Works in Wanstead (and always in maroon colour!), it was launched in 1946 as a response to the desperate lack of sewing machines available in post-war Britain and remained in production until 1956. Although small in size the Essex was never a toy but a fully functioning sewing machine capable of excellent results. They were superbly made and nearly all of those that sill survive are in good working order.

This is a rare example of an Essex that has retained its original carrying case, its detachable work table, its clamp and the original instruction booklet. It is in full working order and in beautiful condition.

The sewing machine base is 22.5cm wide and 15.8cm deep. The highest point on the Essex is 19cm tall. The machine on its stand weighs just under 1.5kg.
The case is 28cm wide, 19cm deep and 20.5cm high. When full boxed up with all its bits and pieces it weighs in at just over 2.7kg.
