Edwardian Silver Trinket Pot, William Comyns, 1905
This is a charming Edwardian Sterling Silver Trinket Pot with embossed flower decoration across the lid and a satin lined interior. The pot is round with a bulbous body and a hinged lid which is gilded on the inside. An elegant lily in the Art Nouveau style embellishes the lid. This would look very striking on any dressing table or bedside cabinet today and is ideal for any small items of antique jewellery.
The pot is made in London by celebrated silversmiths William Comyns & Sons and dates to 1905. Founded by William Comyns in 1859 and later joined by his sons, the firm quickly established a reputation for producing fine quality silverware, often with exquisite decoration. The firm remained in the Comyns family until the 1950s and still continues in business today.
Condition is good with just a couple of small dings and some staining to the blue satin lining. The lid is a very tight fit and the hinge is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pot is 6cm / 2.3ins in diameter at its widest point and stands 3cm / 1.2ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 46.2g / 1.6oz, which does include a tiny contribution from the satin lining.
There is a full set of hallmarks on the underside of the base which shows the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter k for 1905 and the distinctive W C makers' mark for William Comyns & Sons. In addition there is a partial set on the lid showing the lion passant, the date letter k and the W C makers' mark. There is also a registered design number of 426309, which dates the original design to 1904/5.
