Edwardian Silver Toast Rack, Mappin & Webb, 1905
This is an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Six Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack has an oblong base with rounded corners standing on four ball feet. The dividers are round topped arches and the finger ring handle is circular. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The toast rack was made in Sheffield by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1905. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 115 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack measures 10.8cm / 4.25ins by 6.3cm / 2.5ins and stands 10.2cm / 4ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 131.3g / 4.63oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, at one end of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter n for 1905 and the M & W makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. In addition, the underside of the base has the retail stamp Mappin & Webb London.
