Edwardian Silver Teaspoons & Tongs, S'field, 1906
Here we have an elegant cased set of Edwardian Sterling Silver Teaspoons and Sugar Tongs in an Art Nouveau pattern. The upper part of the stems and the arms of the sugar tongs are beautifully decorated in typically sinuous Art Nouveau style around a shield shaped cartouche. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The set of teaspoons and sugar tongs are made in Sheffield by Joseph Rodgers & Sons and date to 1906. The firm of cutlers & silversmiths could trace its origins back to the 1780s, becoming Joseph Rodgers & Sons around 1843. They produced a wide range of consistently high quality silverware up until the late 1930s. The set comes in its original case from retailer Jays of London, who were, slightly confusingly, based in Brighton.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 115 years of good service. The box is a little scuffed on the outside but the interior is in nice condition and the hinges and clasp are in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoons are each 11cm / 4.3ins long as are the sugar tongs. The set of 6 teaspoons and the tongs, unboxed, weighs in at a very substantial 112.3g / 4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stems of the spoons and the inside of the arm of the sugar tongs, are all well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter o for 1906 and the JR makers' mark with the star and cross trademark for Joseph Rodgers & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
