Edwardian Silver Shell Dish, John Round, 1905
Here we have a good quality large Edwardian Sterling Silver Shell Dish. The dish is shaped as a scallop shell and stands on three ball feet. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
This is a particularly large shell dish. These ever popular dishes were mostly intended as butter dishes for the dining table but lend themselves to many uses such as trinket dishes on a dressing table, for stationery items on a desk, for potpourri, for snacks or for a range of sauces or condiments on the table.
The shell dish was made in Sheffield by John Round & Son and dates to 1905. John Round established his business in 1847 in a small workshop attached to his house in Sheffield. His son Edwin joined the business and they became John Round & Son. The firm were both silversmiths and electroplaters and registered marks at the Sheffield, Chester and London assay offices. The Round family sold the business in 1874 but it continued to be known as John Round & Son Ltd until it was finally bought out by Joseph Rodgers & Sons in the 1930s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is 16cm / 6.3ins from handle to rim, 14cm / 5.5ins across and stands 3.5cm / 1.4ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 106.0g / 3.74oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the handle of the shell, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter n for 1905 and the J.R in an oval makers' mark for John Round & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the shell dish.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
