Edwardian Silver Ring Tree, Chester, 1901

1 of 5
This is a high quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Ring Tree. It is made by Nathan & Hayes and assayed in Chester in 1901. George Nathan & Ridley Hayes founded their silversmith company in Birmingham around 1889. They made a wide variety of items and between 1897 and 1902 they had some of their smaller vanity items assayed in Chester rather than Birmingham, which was a common practice. They ceased trading during the First World War, around about 1916.
This is a very attractive silver ring tree with a domed ribbed base flattening out to a floral edge. The tree itself has a central stem with three shorter curved arms at the lower level and three straighter arms towards the top. Each arm and the top of the stem have a ball finial to stop the rings slipping off. The base is weighted for stability and has a thin leather cover.
Silver ring trees from this period are highly sought after and to have one with the rarer Chester hallmark makes it even more desirable.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and only the most superficial surface wear. It will give good service for many years to come and will look stunning on a dressing table with rings hanging on the branches. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ring tree stands 8.3cm / 3.25" high and is 4cm / 1.5" across the base. It weighs 34.2g / 1.2oz but please remember this includes the weighting in the base.
The hallmarks on the edge of the base are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter "A" for 1901 and the N&H makers' mark for Nathan & Hayes.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post which includes cover for the value of the item.
