Edwardian Silver Quaich, Chester, 1909
Here we have a fine quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Quaich or Porringer. These two handled bowls have been produced in a variety of sizes and had many uses down the centuries. Today they are mostly associated with the Scottish quaich tradition of drinking whisky from them. This is a medium sized quaich with eight panels in the body and two upturned axe head handles.
The quaich was made by silversmiths Martin, Hall & Co and assayed in Chester in 1909. The firm was founded by Richard Martin and brothers Ebenezer & Joshua Hall in 1854 as the successor to Roberts & Hall, in which Ebenezer had been a partner. The company manufactured in Sheffield and had showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia. They participated in many international exhibitions and won a number of awards. The firm went into decline with the economic downturn of the 1930s and had ceased trading by 1936.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you have to expect after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The quaich measures 16cm / 6.3ins from handle to handle, 10.8cm / 4.2ins across the top rim of the bowl and stands 2.8cm / 1.1ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 112.9g / 3.98oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the outside of the bowl below one of the handles, are nice and clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the script date letter I for 1909 and the R.M over E.H makers' mark for Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall of Martin, Hall & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the quaich.
