Edwardian Silver Mustard Pot, William Aitken, 1909
Here we have a high quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its original blue glass liner. In keeping with the Georgian Revival of the late 19th and early 20th century, this is in the drum design, a copy of the earliest form of mustard pot originating in the 1760s. The initials HG are engraved in Old English style on the lid of the pot.
The mustard pot is made by accomplished silversmith William Aitken in Birmingham and dates to 1909. William Aitken set up his business in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter around 1890. He quickly established a reputation for good quality silverware for the home and table and remained in business into the early 1920s.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents in the silver and no salt corrosion. The blue glass liner has no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is a well made piece in a good gauge of silver. It measures 8cm / 3.1ins from rim to handle, 5.5cm / 2.1ins in diameter and stands 6.1cm / 2.4ins high. Without the blue glass liner, the pot weighs a substantial 76.5g / 2.7oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs in at 166.7g / 5.9oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter k for 1909 and the W.A in an oval makers' mark for William Aitken.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mustard pot.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
