Edwardian Silver Mounted Patience Box, London 1904 Edwardian Playing Card Box Ebonised Wood %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have a stylish Edwardian Sterling Silver Mounted Patience Box complete with two sets of original playing cards. The ebonised wooden box has a set of four silver cards in the centre of the lid and the word Patience, also in silver, at the top left hand corner. Inside are two packs of Piatnik playing cards with floral designs on the backs and a small booklet with the rules for 12 different games of Patience.

The box was made in London by Wild & Carr and dates to 1904. Originally registered at Goldsmith’s Hall in London as Wild & Co in 1899, by 1902 they had become Wild & Carr. The firm’s principal business was making silver mounts for walking sticks, canes and umbrellas but they also produced a small range of gifts and accessories. They ceased trading in the late 1920s.

The playing cards are by renowned Austrian firm Piatnik, one of the foremost playing card and games manufacturers in Europe with a history dating back to 1843.

Condition is very good, with just a small blister in the varnish on the bottom right hand corner of the lid and one or two scratches on the outside of the box. The silver mounts are in good condition and the hinges and clasp are in working order. Both packs of cards are complete, including three jokers in each set. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The box is 12.5cm / 4.9ins by 9.5cm / 3.7ins and stands 2.5cm / 0.98ins high. It weighs 302.5g / 10.67oz.

The hallmarks on the silver cards are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter II for 1904 and the W & C makers' mark for Wild & Carr. The word Patience is the same but with the letter h for 1903 and the makers' mark is obscured by the pin holding the lettering in place.
