An attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver handled four piece manicure set from the early 20th century. The set is made in Birmingham by silversmiths Sothers, Orchard & Co and dates to 1908. Sothers & Orchard seem to have had an extremely short lived partnership as their mark is only known from 1907 & 1908 on a very small number of items, making their pieces rare and hard to find. In 1909 W.G. Sothers set up his own company and mark, which carried on up to the early sixties. There seems to be no evidence of the fate of Mr Orchard...

The manicure set is made up of 4 pieces: a nail buffer, a nail file, a set of tweezers and a cuticle tool. The handles are hallmarked sterling silver with a wavy edged pattern. The working ends of the nail file, tweezers and cuticle tool are all marked as English Made Steel. The soft part of the nail buffer is made from suede.

The four pieces have all definitely been used and show some signs of wear by way of surface scratching but there are no dings, dents or splits in the silver. They would benefit from some careful cleaning in the nooks and crannies. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The nail buffer is 8.9cm long and 3.5cm wide. The three tools are each 11.5cm long.
The hallmarks on the handles of the tools and on the side of the buffer, are a little rubbed but still easily deciphered and the ones on the buffer are very clear. They are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "i" for 1908 and the S.O. & Co makers' mark for Sothers, Orchard & Co.
