Edwardian Silver Ink Blotter, A & J Zimmerman 1910
Here we have a practical and stylish Edwardian Sterling Silver Topped Ink Blotter. The blotter is rectangular and decorated with an embossed gadrooned and shell pattern. The rocker that holds the blotting paper is silver plated and accessed by simply squeezing the sides to release it from the lid. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The ink blotter was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths A & J Zimmerman and dates to 1910. The firm was founded by brothers Arthur & John Zimmerman in Birmingham in 1879, operating from premises at Regent Place in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They later opened a second premises and a showroom in London. They produced a wide range of silverware of consistently good quality up until they ceased trading around 1930.
Condition is very good, with just one very shallow ding in the top of the silver handle. There is some rubbing to the silver plate on the rocker. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ink blotter is 10.4cm / 4.1ins by 7.6cm / 3ins and stands 5.4cm / 2.1ins high. The top by itself weighs in at a respectable 49.4g / 1.7oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the blotter weighs 115.5g / 4.1oz.
The hallmarks on the silver top are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the A & J Z in a shield makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the ink blotter.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
