Edwardian Silver Grape Shears, Elkington & Co 1909
This is a well-made pair of good quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Grape Shears in the Thread & Bow pattern. The arms of the shears are double struck with the thread & bow design on both top and bottom. The central pivot is decorated with a flower within a beaded circle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The grape shears are made in Birmingham by Elkington & Co and date to 1909. Elkington & Co are one of the great names of English silverware. Founded in 1836, they took out the world's first silver electroplating patent in 1838. However they always continued to produce very high quality Sterling Silver alongside their silver plate as these grape shears show. The company was merged into British Silverware with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb in 1963.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and, importantly, no notches in the silver blades. There is just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 110 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The grape shears are 18.1cm / 7.1ins long and they weigh in at a substantial 147.9g / 5.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the finger rings, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter k for 1909 and the distinctive E & Co makers' mark for Elkington & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the grape shears.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
