Edwardian Silver Belt Buckle, C.E. Adams, 1902
A very elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Belt Buckle with a complex foliate design and beautiful engraving. The buckle was made in Birmingham by silversmith Charles Edward Adams and dates to 1902. C.E. Adams seems to have had quite a short career, operating out of premises in Icknield Street, Birmingham, which today marks the western boundary of the Jewellery Quarter, from around 1900 to 1910. Clearly it wasn't his workmanship that cut short his career as this is an exquisitely made piece in a good gauge of silver.
Condition is excellent, with no dings, dents or splits. The clip joining the two halves is secure and the bars to attach the belt are robust. This could easily be used today and be a very stylish design piece or would equally make a lovely gift or addition to a collection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The hallmarks on the reverse of the buckle are well struck and clear to read. There is a full set on one half consisting of the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "c" for 1902 and the C.E.A makers' mark for Charles Edward Adams. The other half has just the lion passant and the date letter "c" as was usually the case.
The buckle is 8.3cm across at its widest point and 5.9cm from top to bottom. It weighs a substantial 34.5g of solid sterling silver.
