Edwardian Silver & MOP Muffin Fork, AJ Bailey 1902
This is an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Muffin Fork with a Mother of Pearl Handle. The fork has a silver ferrule or collar at the top of the mother of pearl handle, a fluted shaft and a trident style head which is engraved on the upper side with flowers and scrolls. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
English muffins are traditionally torn open with a fork rather than cut with a knife as the resulting rough texture gives a lovely crisp top when toasted.
The muffin fork was made in Birmingham by A.J. Bailey and dates to 1902. The firm of A.J.Bailey was established in Birmingham in the 1890s, later becoming A.J. Bailey & Son. They principally produced flatware and tableware and were very successful, remaining in business under the management of the Bailey family until well into the 1970s
Condition is extremely good, with no damage to the mother of pearl, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The muffin fork is 15cm / 5.9ins long and weighs 30.9g / 1.1oz.
The hallmarks, on the head of the fork, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the A.J.B makers' mark for A.J. Bailey.
