Edwardian Silver 8 x 6 Photo Frame, B'ham, 1906
Here we have a fine quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Photo Frame. The frame is a plain oblong and very contemporary looking. The visible picture size is 8ins x 6ins. The back has a blue corduroy fabric covering which, whilst not original, works perfectly well. There is an unusual mechanism to open the back which involves folding down and pulling out the two long pins at the bottom corners which then releases the back and allows it to be removed.
The frame was made in Birmingham by E. Mander & Son and dates to 1906. Elisha Mander founded his firm of specialist frame makers as E. Mander & Son in the 1890s. They were based in Birmingham and London and made a wide variety of photo frames of consistently high quality. In 1924 they became E. Mander Ltd and remained in business into the 1950s.
Condition is extremely good with no dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 115 years of good service. As mentioned above, the back has been re-covered with soft blue corduroy at some point in its life. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The frame is of a good size measuring 23.5cm / 9.2ins by 18.5cm / 7.3ins and is intended for an 8in x 6in photograph. It weighs 849g / 29.9oz.
The hallmarks, on the left hand side of the frame, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter g for 1906 and the E.M & S makers' mark for E. Mander & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the frame.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
