Edwardian Glass & Silver Dressing Table Pot, 1906

This is a fine quality Edwardian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid. The glass pot is oval with a star cut base and the body is decorated with bands of ribs and star cut roundels. The silver lid has an embossed design in the folkore style, with the Green Man surrounded by flowers and foliage beneath a blank scallop shell cartouche. It is gilded on the inside.
The dressing table pot was made by highly regarded silversmiths Nathan & Hayes and assayed in Chester in 1906. George Nathan and Ridley Hayes began their partnership in Birmingham in the late 1880s. They are particularly known for their good quality silver tableware, which they primarily assayed in Birmingham, and more personal items such as buckles, buttons and dressing table jars, which they mostly assayed in Chester. They remained in business up until around 1920.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and just a couple of tiny pinholes on highpoints in the silver lid that have been worn through after many years of polishing. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pot is 11.9cm / 4.7ins long, 5.3cm / 2.1ins wide and stands 4cm / 1.6ins high. The lid by itself weighs in at a respectable 28.6g / 1oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the pot weighs 185.8g / 6.5oz.
The hallmarks, on the outside rim of the lid, are a little rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the cursive date letter F for 1906 and the G.N over R.H makers' mark for George Nathan and Ridley Hayes of Nathan & Hayes.
