Edwardian Dressing Table Pot, George Wish, 1901
This is an elegant Edwardian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid. The pot is oblong with rounded corners. The glass is hobnail cut all around the body and has a star cut base. The silver lid has engine turned stripes with a central circular blank cartouche.
The dressing table pot was made by George Wish and assayed in London in 1901. George Wish founded his firm in Sheffield in the 1870s, initially in partnership with William Sampson and from 1878 by himself. The company were electroplaters, pewterers and silversmiths. In the 1890s he opened a showroom in London’s Hatton Garden district and registered a mark at Goldsmith’s Hall. George died in 1928 and the firm ceased trading in the early 1930s.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pot is 9.9cm / 3.9ins long by 3.7cm / 1.4ins wide and stands 3.4cm / 1.3ins high. The lid by itself weighs in at a respectable 37.2g / 1.3oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the pot weighs 184.9g / 6.5oz.
The hallmarks, on the outside rim of the lid, are a little rubbed but still okay to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter f for 1901 and the G.W makers' mark for George Wish.
