Edwardian 3 Piece Silver Accesory Set, 1901
This is an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Handled 3 Piece Dressing Accessory Set. The set consists of a shoe horn, a long button hook and a pair of glove stretchers. The handles are decorated in the folklore style with a Green Man face peering out of foliage at the bottom of each silver handle. The upper parts of the three items are made of steel.
The set was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Hilliard & Thomason and dates to 1901. John Hilliard established his business in 1837 in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Around 1840 he was joined by John Thomason and the firm was renamed Hilliard & Thomason. They were very successful and established a reputation for fine quality small items for domestic, table and personal use. The firm remained in business up until around 1910.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The button hook is 27.1cm / 10.6ins long, the shoe horn is 22.1cm / 8.7ins long and the glove stretchers are 20.6cm / 8.1ins long. The set of three items weighs in at 251g / 8.8oz.
The hallmarks, on the sides of the handles, are small but clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter b for 1901 and the H & T makers' mark for Hilliard & Thomason.
