Bronze Trio Bay Hunter Horses Wall Sculpture

“Sporting Thoroughbreds” – British Art Deco Bronze Wall Plaque, Circle of John Rattenbury Skeaping, c.1925
Subject & Medium
A fine British Art Deco bronze relief plaque depicting three bridled hunter thoroughbreds shown in proud profile, their heads lifted with alert ears and powerful necks. Cast in solid bronze with a naturally developed patina, the plaque retains its original suspension chain. To the reverse, an early foundry number “7156” is crisply stamped, confirming its period manufacture.
Composition & Technique
Executed in elegant low relief, the plaque combines Deco stylisation with naturalistic observation.
Jawlines, flared nostrils, and fine musculature convey strength and refinement.
The reins and bridles are carefully detailed, providing texture and contrast.
A stippled background enhances depth and shadow, setting the horses forward.
The bronze surface, now softly variegated with time, enriches the modelling and adds warmth to the composition.
Despite its small scale, the work carries a striking sculptural presence, its quiet rhythm and clarity of line characteristic of the Art Deco period.
Attribution
While unsigned, this plaque bears the hallmarks of the circle of John Rattenbury Skeaping (1901–1980). A Royal Academician and contemporary of Barbara Hepworth, Skeaping was among the most accomplished interpreters of equestrian form in 20th-century Britain. His bronzes of the 1920s and 30s are admired for their balance of anatomical truth and sculptural elegance—qualities clearly echoed in this work.
