Britannia Silver 5" x 3" Photo Frame, London, 1987
This is an elegant Vintage Britannia Silver Photo Frame in a late Victorian / Edwardian style. The visible picture size is 5ins by 3ins. The silver front is decorated by alternate concave and convex ovals linked by trailing flowers. The back is covered with blue velvet.
Britannia Silver is a higher grade of silver than Sterling with a purity of 95.8% as against 92.5%. It was compulsory from 1696 to 1720 and has remained optional, though rarely used, ever since.
The photo frame was made in London by RBB Silverware and dates to 1987. Active between the mid-1960s and the mid-1990s, RBB Silverware are best known for their range of silver fronted photo frames in a variety of designs that were sold through many high end department stores.
Condition is good, with just a couple of tiny dings in the silver plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. There is a little wear to the velvet covering at the corners. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The frame is 18cm / 7.1ins high by 13.2cm / 5.2ins wide and is 13.5cm / 5.3ins deep with the strut fully extended. It weighs 181g / 6.38oz.
The hallmarks, at the bottom of the frame, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the Britannia stamp for Britannia Silver (958/1000 grade), the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter N for 1987 and the R B B makers' mark for RBB Silverware.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
