Art Nouveau Large Silver Hand Mirror, Chester 1907

1 of 6
This is a quite stunning Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Hand Mirror of the very best quality. The back, frame and both sides of the handle are extensively decorated with entwined flowers and foliage, whilst the round mirror has a bevelled edge. The central cartouche on the back is blank making this ideal as a gift.
The mirror is made by Martin, Hall & Co and assayed in Chester in 1907. Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall were actually in business in Sheffield but around 1907/08 they sent a number of their pieces to the Chester assay office to be marked, possibly because the Sheffield office was very busy at the time. The firm dated back to around 1820 and remained in business up until the mid-1930s.
Condition is very good with just a very slight dent in the top rim of the frame and couple of tiny pinholes on the high points of the decoration on the back where the silver has been rubbed through during cleaning over many years. The mirror glass is in very good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
This is a large hand mirror being 27.4cm / 10.8ins from top to bottom and 15.5cm / 6.1ins across. It weighs in at 478.9g / 16.9oz.
The hallmarks, just above the cartouche on the back, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter G for 1907 and the RM over EH makers' mark for Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall of Martin, Hall & Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mirror.
