Art Nouveau Alvin Silver Overlaid Scent Bottle
We have for sale a rather beautiful silver overlaid art nouveau clear glass scent bottle by the American manufacturer Alvin Mfg.co. of Irvington, New Jersey.
This lovely long necked globe shaped clear glass scent bottle has been decorated in 999 grade solid silver using a technique patented by the Alvin Manufacturing Company (Alvin Mfg.Co) in 1886 in which the whole bottle and stopper was coated in a quite thick layer of 999 fineness silver. The silver overlay was then cut out and worked thus creating a beautiful art nouveaue decoration incorporating in this particular case a vacant cartouche amidst a scrolling flower and foliate design. The silver overlay carries the 999/1000 fineness mark, the number 14, the Alvin Mfg. co. mark and the PATENTED mark used from 1886.
The scent bottle is approximately 3.25 inches (8.3cm) high to the top of the stopper, 2 inches (5cm) wide at the widest point and is in a very good antique condition although the 1000 component of the fineness and the Alvin Mfg.co. marks are both rubbed but just about legible.
The Alvin Manufacturing Company was established in 1886 in New Jersey by Wm. H. Jamoneau. The company then moved to Sag Harbour, Long Island in 1895 having changed name to Alvin-Beiderhase Co in around 1893. The company was then bought by Joseph Fahys & Co in 1897 and changed name once again in 1919 to the Alvin Silver Co. The company and assets including the designs were then bought by Gorham but continued to trade under the name of Alvin Corporation.
