Art Deco Silver Toast Rack, William Neale, 1936
Here we have a very stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Six Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack has a rectangular base standing on four bracket feet. The dividers are flat topped and the arched handle has odeon style decoration on the top. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The toast rack was made in Birmingham by William Neale & Son Ltd and dates to 1936. The firm was founded by William Neale in Birmingham in 1862, becoming William Neale & Son in 1890. They produced a very wide range of silverware from trophies to tea services and cigarette boxes to pencils and were highly successful. They remained in business into the mid 1960s.
Condition is very good, with just a slight kink on one shoulder of the central divider plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack is 12.2cm / 4.8ins by 6.1cm / 2.4ins and stands 9.5cm / 3.7ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 121.8g / 4.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the side of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter M for 1936 and the W.N LTD makers' mark for William Neale & Son Ltd.
