Art Deco Silver Sauce Boat, Maple & Co, 1933
Here we have a wonderfully stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver SAuce Boat from the 1930s. The sauce boat has an oval pedestal foot and oval body which extends to a sharp pointed pouring lip. At the other end is a typically Deco squared off handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sauce boat was made for famous London retailer Maple & Co and assayed in Sheffield in 1933. Maple & Co was founded by John Maple in 1841 and throughout its existence traded from premises in London’s Tottenham Court Road. They were principally a manufacturer and retailer of antique furniture but their store also sold a wide range of other household items to appeal to their customers, many of whom were drawn from British and European royalty and aristocracy. The company boomed in the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco eras but began to struggle after the Second World War and despite mergers and takeovers they ceased trading in 1997.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after around 90 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sauce boat measures 14.1cm / 5.5ins from lip to handle, 6.5cm / 2.5ins across the top of the body and stands 5.8cm / 2.3ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 98.7g / 3.48oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter q for 1933 and the M & Co sponsors' mark for Maple & Co. In addition there is the MAPLE & CO, LONDON retailer's stamp and the registered design number 788519, which dates the original design also to 1933.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the sauce boat.
