Art Deco Silver Hand Mirror, Mappin & Webb, 1929
Here we have a beautiful Art Deco Sterling Silver Hand Mirror. The bevelled glass mirror is set in a silver mount that is plain on the mirror side and has engine turned decoration with a border of bows and flowers on the back. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind making this ideal as a gift.
The had mirror is made in London by Mappin & Webb, probably England's most famous silversmiths, and dates to 1929, when Art Deco styles were beginning to dominate the market. The bow and flower border shows there were still transitional elements from the Art Nouveau era that preceded Art Deco.
Condition is extremely good with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the silver backing. The mirror glass is in good condition with only a few very small surface scratches and gives a nice clear reflection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mirror is 30cm / 11.8ins long and 11.2cm / 4.4ins across. It weighs in at 285.3g / 10oz.
The hallmarks on the side of the mirror are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter o for 1929 and the Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. In addition the top of the mirror bears the Mappin & Webb retail stamp and the registered design number 750740, which shows that this design was also first registered in 1929.
