Art Deco Silver Gilt Cigarette Case, London, 1937
Here we have a luxurious Art Deco Sterling Silver Gilt Cigarette Case. The case is rectangular with bands of engine turned decoration both back and front and gilded all over, both outside and inside. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cigarette case is imported into London by Padgett & Braham Ltd and dates to 1937. Stanley Padgett bought the firm of J. Braham Ltd in 1922 and renamed it Padgett & Braham Ltd. Braham was a small firm that had specialised in cigarette cases. Padgett went on to acquire further firms from the 1930s to the 1970s and established Padgett & Braham at the forefront of London's antique jewellery and silversmith business. The firm finally closed in 2006.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that is inevitable in an item that is constantly being carried in pockets or handbags for over 80 years. The hinge and clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case measures 9.7cm / 3.8ins by 7.9cm / 3.1ins and weighs a very substantial 122.5g / 4.3oz.
The import hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the .925 stamp for Sterling Silver, the astrological Leo assay mark for London imports, the date letter B for 1937 and the P & B ld in an oval importers' mark for Padgett & Braham Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
