Here we have a luxurious Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Case. The case has engine turned decoration to front and back, a gilt interior and a sapphire cabochon clasp. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The cigarette case was imported by The London Chain Bag Co Ltd and assayed in London in 1926. The London Chain Bag Company was based in Warwick Street in London’s West End between around 1910 and 1930. They started by importing highly fashionable silver mesh handbags and purses from France, who were considered to be the finest producers of these bags. They then expanded into importing the stylish items that ladies would keep in these bags such as compacts, lipstick holders, pill boxes and smoking accessories. Like so many firms they ceased trading in the economic crash of the late 1920s.

Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 95 years, much of it spent in a pocket or handbag. There is a little rubbing to the gilt interior. The hinge and clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

When closed, the cigarette case is 7.8cm / 3.1ins by 6.6cm / 2.6ins and 0.8cm / 0.31ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 82.8g / 2.92oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are well struck and clear to read. The show the 925 stamp for Sterling Silver, the astrological sign for Leo showing that it is an import assayed in London, the Gothic date letter l for 1926 and the L C B Co Ltd sponsors' mark for The London Chain Bag Company Ltd.
