Art Deco Silver 3 Pce Condiment Set, B'ham, 1936

1 of 6
Here we have a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Three Piece Condiment Set with its original blue glass liners. The set consists of a pepper shaker, an open salt and a mustard pot. The pieces are square based with tapered square sides and pyramidal lids to the shaker and mustard pot. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The set was made in Birmingham by A.J. Bailey & Son for retailer Oliver & Bower with the salt and mustard dated 1936 and the pepper shaker dated 1935. The firm of A.J.Bailey was established in Birmingham in the 1890s, later becoming A.J. Bailey & Son. They principally produced flatware and tableware and were very successful, remaining in business under the management of the Bailey family until well into the 1970s. Oliver & Bower were high end retailers in London's prestigious Hatton Garden district from the 1930s through to the 1990s.
Condition is good, with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect and a small amount of salt corrosion below the blue glass liner in the open salt. The hinged lid on the mustard pot works smoothly and the pull off lid on the pepper shaker fits securely. There are no chips or cracks in the glass liners. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
This is a well made set in a heavy gauge of silver. The open salt is 5.1cm / 2ins square and stands 4.4cm / 1.7ins high. The pepper shaker is 3.3cm / 1.3ins square and stands 10.4cm / 4.1ins high. The mustard pot is 8cm / 3.1ins from rim to handle, 5.1cm / 2ins square and stands 6.3cm / 2.5ins high. Without the glass liners the set weighs in at a substantial 167.8g / 5.9oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the set weighs 261.1g / 9.2oz.
The hallmarks are a little rubbed but all are clear to read. Thery show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham and the date letter L for 1935 on the pepper shaker and M for 1936 on the mustard and salt. Both the pepper shaker and the mustard pot have the makers' mark A.J.B for A.J Bailey, whilst the open salt has the sponsors' mark O & B Ltd for the retailer Oliver & Bower Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £12.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
