Art Deco 4 Pce Silver Condiment Set, Sheff. 1932/3
This is a stylish Art Deco Four Piece Condiment Set with its original blue glass liners. The set comprises a mustard pot, a pepper shaker and two open salts. The pieces are round with spreading bases and stepped lids on the mustard pot and pepper shaker. The set is completed by a mustard spoon and two salt spoons, which are not the originals but are of the correct size, style and period and of equally good quality.
The condiment set is made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths Roberts & Belk with the mustard pot and two salts dated 1932 and the pepper shaker 1933. The two salt spoons are made by Adie Brothers in Birmingham and date to 1933 and 1936, whilst the mustard spoon is made by James Swann & Son in Birmingham and dates to 1934.
Condition is good with no dings or dents in the silver pieces and just a small amount of salt spotting. The blue glass liners are also in good condition with no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is 6.5cm / 2.5ins from rim to handle, 5.1cm / 2ins in diameter and stands 7cm / 2.7ins high. The mustard spoon is 7.1cm / 2.8ins long. The open salts are 5.1cm / 2ins in diameter and stand 3.8cm / 1.5ins high. The salt spoons are 6cm / 2.3ins long. The pepper shaker is 7.7cm / 3ins high and 3.9cm / 1.5ins in diameter. All together, without the blue glass liners, the set weighs in at a very substantial 178.5g / 6.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the undersides of the bases of the mustard pot and the salts and on the side of the body of the pepper shaker. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letters p for 1932 on the mustard & the salts and q for 1933 on the pepper and the R & B makers' mark for Roberts & Belk. The salt spoons have the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letters J for 1933 & M for 1936 and the A.Bros Ltd makers' mark for Adie Brothers. The mustard spoon has the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter K for 1934, the George V Silver Jubilee mark and the J.S & S makers' mark for James Swann & Son.
