This is an antique telescope, a single draw 'Officer of the Watch' telescope retailed by Royal Navy outfitters Gieves Ltd, London and dating to the early 20th century. An identical item with different serial number can be seen in the Royal Museums, Greenwich, London.
'Officer of the Watch' telescopes were commonly used on board ship from the 19th century onwards. Gieves Ltd were the retailer in this case, being the London based Royal Navy outfitters established in 1785. They remain a premium, luxury brand operating from No.1 Saville Row, London today trading as Gieves and Hawkes.
Perfect today for bird watching, landscape appreciation, wildlife, or maritime observation. Equally suitable for observing the night sky. Supplied ready to enjoy.
