A Pair of Georgian Silver Sugar Tongs
A pair of Georgian Silver sugar tongs with bright cut decoration.
An unusual aspect of these tongs is the clip mark to the base of the duty mark that denotes an increase in duty from the 10th October 1804. The duty increased was from 1 shilling to 1 shilling 3 pence per ounce and this duty was raised to help pay for the costs of the American war of independence.
The tongs weigh 23g and measure 135mm long.
The tongs are believed to have been made by Silversmith John Lumbe (makers mark & assay office rubbed)and Hallmarked in the London Assay Office in 1804.
The tongs are in excellent condition with no damage. (makers marks & assay office rubbed)
