6 x Silver Handled Tea Knives, Sheffield, 1911/12
This is a good quality Cased Set of Six George V Sterling Silver Handled Tea Knives. The tea knives are in the Georgian Revival style with Shell End Pistol silver handles and Scimitar shape steel blades. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tea knives were made in Sheffield by Harrison Brothers & Howson and date to 1911/12, three knives from each year. The firm was founded in 1847 when James & Henry Harrison and James Howson acquired the Sheffield silversmith business of Thomas Sansom & Sons. They quickly established themselves as high class cutlers, silversmiths and electroplaters and remained in the Harrison and Howson families until the business was bought out by Viner's Ltd in 1923, although the brand name was continued by Viner's for some years after that date.
Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. The box is a little scuffed on the outside but the blue satin and velvet interior is in good condition and the hinges and clasp are all in working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each knife is 16.2cm / 6.4ins long and the set of six together, unboxed, weighs in at 191g / 6.7oz.
The hallmarks on the silver handles are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter t for 1911 or u for 1912 and the G H makers' mark for George Howson of Harrison Brothers & Howson.
