6 x George VI Silver Coffee Spoons, ASP Co, 1941
Here we have a fine cased set of six George VI Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons in Celtic Point pattern from the Second World War. Celtic Point is a variant of Old English pattern, originally developed in Ireland in the 18th century, where the end of the spoon is pointed instead of rounded.
Silver was a restricted material in wartime and many firms had their resources and staff redirected into the war effort, so silver items from the Second World War are comparatively rare.
This set of six coffee spoons are made in Sheffield by the Angora Silver Plate Co and date to 1941. Despite their name, the company produced solid silver items between around 1920 and 1941. After the war they never went back to Sterling Silver and just produced silver plate. They were in business into the early 1970s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and only the most minimal surface wear. Perhaps because they were a rare and expensive treat (possibly a wedding present?) during the war years, they have clearly been very well looked after in the 80 years since. The case is a little scuffed on the outside but has done its job and kept the spoons in lovely condition. The clasps and hinges are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoons are each 9.7cm / 3.8ins long and the set of six together (unboxed) weighs in at a respectable 51.2g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter y for 1941 and the A.S.P.Co makers mark for the Angora Silver Plate Co. In addition they also have a registered design number of 838095, which also dates the original design to 1940/41.
