2 x Art Nouveau Silver Bud Vases, B'ham, 1901
This is an elegant Pair of Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Bud Vases from the Edwardian era. The vases have circular bases, weighted for stability, and swirling ribbed bodies tapering out to scalloped rims.
The vases were made in Birmingham by silversmith William Devenport and date to 1901. William Devenport founded his firm in the 1890s in the heart of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter. Quickly successful, the company produced a huge range of silverware. After William's death in the early 1930s, the company became William Devenport & Co and remained in business into the early 1950s.
Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each vase is 10.1cm / 3.9ins high and 4.4cm / 1.7ins in diameter. The pair together weigh in at 245.3g / 8.6oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the upper parts of the bodies, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter b for 1901 and the W.D makers' mark for William Devenport.
