Here we have a superb quality luxury set of 12 Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoons plus a pair of Sugar Tongs in a stunning domed case. The spoons and tongs are engraved on the stems with a scroll and geometric design and have the initials MW elegantly engraved on them. The case has a blue velvet covered frame to hold the spoons and tongs, which sits on a ruffled silk bed with a blue silk lining inside the lid. It is a very impressive set.

The spoons and tongs are made in Sheffield by the silversmiths Sutherland & Rhoden and date to 1898. Allan Sutherland and George Rhoden went into partnership just as these spoons were made in 1898. Sutherland was the salesman and Rhoden was the silversmith. They manufactured in Sheffield and had a very high end showroom in London's prestigious Hatton Garden district. Sutherland died in 1914 but Rhoden continued the business on into the late 1920s.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of good service. The outside of the box is a little scuffed but the inside is stunning. The hinges and catch are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each teaspoon is 12.4cm / 4.9ins long whilst the sugar tongs are 10.7cm / 4.2ins long. The set of 12 teaspoons plus the tongs, unboxed, weighs in at a very substantial 204g / 7.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks are matching across all the pieces and are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter f for 1898 and the GGR makers' mark for George G Rhoden of Sutherland & Rhoden.
