George V Silver Jewellery Box, Mappin & Webb, 1912
Here we have a top quality George V Sterling Silver Jewellery Box. The antique jewellery box is round with engine turned decoration on the top of the hinged lid surrounding a blank cartouche. The body of the box stands on three Art Nouveau style splayed feet. Inside the box is lined with green velvet and the underside of the lid is gilded to create a very luxurious overall look.
The jewellery box is made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1912 at the height of the Belle Epoque prior to the First World War. Mappin & Webb are renowned for the quality of their silverware and you know for certain that pieces bearing their mark will be well made with a high end finish.
Condition is very good with just a small dent in the rim of the lid and a tiny ding on the opposite side plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after this period of time. The box opens and closes securely and the hinge is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 8cm / 3.1ins in diameter and stands 4.5cm / 1.8ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 165g / 5.8oz, although a small amount of this is made up by the velvet interior.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter n for 1912 and the Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. There is also the retail stamp for Mappin & Webb Ltd. The rim of the lid is also marked with the lion passant and the date letter n.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the jewellery box.
